Flux Assignment
-5 Maintenance: The character is assigned to maintenance and repair. During a tour on Maintenance, the personnel are continually on the move from base to base, performing the routine cleaning, maintenance and repair of Ships and Facilities. This is the thankless, necessary job of clearing out ventilation shafts, scrubbing carbon scoring from hulls, exchanging worn parts for new parts (often while the regular crew is enjoying a break from the rigors of space travel).
-4 Planetside: The character is assigned to a facility or base located on a settled planet well within the boundaries of Federation Space. Personnel here perform a variety of bureaucratic and administrative duties.
-3 Auxillary: The character is assigned to a vessel or station designed to support other ships in Star Fleet. Tugs, Transports, Repair Bases, and Warp-Capable Shuttles
-2 Escort: The character is assigned to the smallest class of vessel Star Fleet uses to patrol, explore and defend the frontier. Vessels assigned to this duty include Cutters, Frigates and Destroyers.
-1 Starbase Duty: The character is assigned to one of the major Starbases within Federation Space. A Tour on a Starbase is an opportunity to encounter and interact with everyone and everything Star Fleet has to offer.
0 Frontier Duty: The character is assigned to a mainstream Fleet vessel, performing the workhorse missions in Starfleet. Vessels on Frontier Duty do not venture nearly as far as other ships assigned to Exploration, but they often operate beyond the boundaries of Federation space for extended periods of time. Most Star Fleet vessels assigned to Frontier Duty belong to the venerable workhorse of the Federation; the Miranda class Light Cruiser.
+1 Survey Duty: The character is assigned to one of Star Fleet’s Survey Vessels. When the ships assigned to Exploration make a discovery, one of the survey ships is sent to make a thorough analysis. Sometimes a Survey mission will last for years.
+2 Diplomatic Corps: The character is assigned to a Star Fleet vessel operating with the Diplomatic Corps. The operation of the ship itself, and all Naval responsibilities are the Captain’s authority, and all mission responsibilities are directed under the authority of the Ambassador or Diplomat.
+3 Deep Space: The character is assigned to one of the Deep Space Starbases located far beyond Federation Space, or one of the distant research Facilities (like Regula-1). These places are isolated, self-sufficient outposts created to directly observe and study very rare Galactic phenomena. In rare instances, a Deep Space Starbase will have a Task Force of ships assigned to it.
+4 Exploration: The character is assigned to one of the Heavy Cruisers vessels of Star Fleet. The Exploration missions is one of the fulfillments of Star Fleet’s mandate, to “Explore strange new worlds, to seek out new life and new civilizations.
+5 Flagship: The character is assigned to one of the Flagships of Star Fleet, an Excelsior Class ship. Flagship Duty is part exploration, part diplomatic mission, part Frontier defense. One thing is for certain though, a Tour on a Flagship is often the Highlight of any Star Fleet Career.
